I look forward to seeing it, and I'm so grateful it led me to this INCREDIBLE work. From the trailer and even more so the nature of the story, a close adaptation just doesn't seem possible. Joshua Rothman on the science-fiction writer Ted Chiang, whose short story The Story of Your Life was adapted for film as Arrival, starring Amy Adams. I really think the movie is just going to take a couple intriguing concepts from the story and go in a whole different direction. It's certainly got me wondering about things I never wondered about before. I agree that it could change the way people think. (And money exceedingly well spent, I might add). After some unsuccessful googling for the free pdf I simply bought the book of stories by Ted Chiang it's in for my Kindle, and I just finished devouring it. I watched it, then googled a bit to find background about it, read a tiny bit about the viral marketing campaign and this short story, and the way people even vaguely described everything totally hooked me. Story of Your Life us in person fear of cooties, maybe. No one knew why the aliens wouldnt talk to. Late to the party but chiming in: I hardly ever let ads play on Youtube, but the trailer to The Arrival caught my attention.
